About Me

My photo
Fly Fish Tennessee - I am a (FIVE time) Fly Casting Champion and I've taught at THE UNIVERSITY OF TENNESSEE, Knoxville. I have fly fished all my life as fly fishing was the glue that bonded me with my dad, Dr. George Still. I made my first fly rod at age 12 and attended an advanced fly tying class with my dad at age 13. I have won a number of fishing contests while growing up. I simply want to provide the OPPORTUNITY for others to enjoy fly fishing by teaching students the sport. It is a terrific way to build lifelong relationships with multiple people. It is a sport that helps with the development of Patience, Kindness, and Gentleness and of course Self Control. I also like catching BIG FISH on BIG water!!! Call 865-696-9474 and tell me your background - I want to hear it.

FIGHT OF THE MONTH - JULY 2018

5+ POUND LARGEMOUTH BASS
GET OUT THERE
FLY FISH TENNESSEE

FORMER STUDENT --- BRIAN WESTPHALEN -- 24" AND 26" BROWN TROUT - same day

 26" Brown Trout

THEN 30 MINUTES LATER
24" Brown Trout
BRIAN WESTPHALEN - former student - Had a "day he will always remember".  Brian was fishing a size 16 homemade nymph down deep... with an indicator.  He fished for a short period of time and decided to DEEPEN his presentation to get down to the fish...  Shortly after he made the adjustment, he was hooked up with what he believed to be a carp!!!  5 Minutes later he was able to get a look at the fish and said "this is not a carp, it is a big trout".  A 26" Brown Trout.   After moving downstream to net the fish, he was able to keep the fish upstream from him in order to use the current to NET the fish!!!   What a great day for him.  But that was only part of the story... 30 Minutes later he hooked into the 24" Brown Trout and repeated the fight all over again.   Making it look easy, he netted #2 lunker for the day.  I am very proud of this accomplished fly fisherman.  Great Job Brian Westphalen.   Both were released in CALM WATER , to allow them to gain their strength back and rest then swim away as they were ready.

David Still -- Hitting the streams and making it look easy

 David Still

Quick Pictures then released

This 17 Inch Rainbow Trout was one of many with David over the past weeks.  His quick reflexes and his ability to Double Haul cast have really allowed him to catch and release many.  I love spending time with him.  GET OUT THERE.

Cheri Johnston - 18 Inch Brown Trout

JUNE 2018 - FIGHT OF THE MONTH - STRIPER

FLY FISH TENNESSEE
FIGHT OF THE MONTH - JUNE 2018

THIS 12LB + FRESHWATER STRIPED BASS -- was the work of JOE FORE putting me "on the fish" with his HOME-MADE special invention of a FLY to imitate a SHAD (baitfish).  Very rewarding to be with a guy that really knows his stuff... and has the passion to deliver.  Double Haul Casting an 8WT sinking line with 20lb leader / tippet is the call for this kind of fishing!!!  Get the grease out for your shoulder joints and GO FOR IT.

MAY 2018 - FIGHT OF THE MONTH

FLY FISH TENNESSEE
FIGHT OF THE MONTH MAY 2018

THIS 20 INCH RAINBOW was down deep in a fast water run... "right where he was supposed to be" and when he hit... I thought I was hung since the fly just STOPPED.   As a matter of fact, I simply gave a quick jerk on the rod to "release the fly from he snag" but I immediately felt the "HEAD SHAKE" and you KNOW what that means.  So, here is the scoop, I knew he was in there because a friend of mine, a week prior,  told me that he lost a "big one" in there... AND BANG... there he his released again for another day....  FLY FISH TENNESSEE.  GET OUT THERE!!!

APRIL 2018 - FIGHT OF THE MONTH

CAUGHT A COUPLE BEAUTIES TODAY

FIGHT OF THE MONTH - APRIL 2018

THIS 20 INCH FEMALE RAINBOW TROUT was "right where she was supposed to be" down DEEP below a ledge that dropped into deep water.  When she hit, I had some "slack" in my line to adjust for the drift... but my trusty size 18 hook held on.... I was in current and when she hit I knew I had to move downstream to net her.  She was in my backing within seconds but by HOLDING THE ROD HIGH, I was able to maintain pressure while traversing downstream to land her in some slow water on the side of the stream.  She took off with many airborne jumps headed downstream like a jumping tarpon... What a fight!!!  After working with her to make sure she was fine, a gentle release in the slow water followed.   Great Day !!

  18 Inch Rainbow Trout

This 18 Inch Rainbow Trout was my first good fish for 2018.  I knew I had a good one when her HEAD SHAKE was felt in the fly rod at the hook set.  My trusty 18 size midge held on for a good fight and then a quick release.  What a GREAT time with friends.
FLY FISH TENNESSEE

My Son David - First Trout for 2018 on Fly Rod

David Still

David Still - Making it look easy!! Casting UPSTREAM and letting his nymph float downstream "naturally" and then the STRIKE.  You can see the deep run on the far side...     Before I could say anything, with his "lightning fast" reflexes on the hook set, the fish was ON.  What a beautiful stretch of water.  After a nice fight, the fish will be there for a future fisherman to enjoy again.  What a great time!!

FLY TYING COMPETITION "WINNER" IRONMAN COMPETITION

AWARD CEREMONY

TYING BLINDFOLDED

THEY CALL ME "IRONMAN" -- The event is called "The Ironman Competition".  A Trout Unlimited Fundraiser for sending young folks to a fishing camp for a week of fly fishing and instruction. There were 18 people competing.  It was a lot of fun.  We had a number of challenges while tying flies... including tying a fly blindfolded, making a fly out of really weird materials, tying without using a vice, and such.

Pictures were taking by JOE FORE a very accomplished fly fisherman and fly tyer.

FIGHT OF THE MONTH - DECEMBER 2017

FIGHT OF THE MONTH - DECEMBER 2017

22" Male Rainbow Trout

FIGHT OF THE MONTH

THIS 22" MALE RAINBOW TROUT hit my size # 18 homemade nymph with my trusty 5x tippet that has NEVER failed me...You can see his HOOKED lower jaw showing that this guy has been around awhile!!!  Keeping him upstream from me as I traversed back and forth in the stream preventing him from getting past me and therefore having to chase him... he wore me out and I wore him out too...it was a great fight for a quick picture and then let him go in SLOW water to allow him gain his strength.... then he swam off.  Beautiful thing letting these fish go.   Get out there - Fly Fish Tennessee.

Mike Stafford - BIG BROWN TROUT

Mike Stafford

18 1/2 " Brown Trout

Former Student - Mike Stafford lands this beautiful male Brown Trout on a size 18 nymph with 5x tippet!!!  He went downstream as the fish TOOK OFF in the current... Mike kept the rod high and tried to stay below the fish in the stream as best he could... then when it was TIME to net him, he was able to get the fish's head up.... and the fish was pushed down to him... into the net.  PERFECT NET JOB.  What fun!!!  After a fight like that, the fish and Mike were both spent!  HA.

FIGHT OF THE MONTH - JULY 2017

FIGHT OF THE MONTH - JULY 2017

MONSTER CARP on a FLY ROD.  Needless to say this size fish will take you far downstream to net!!!  My trusty tippet was able to land this big guy caught on a home-made "squirmy wormy" down deep while fishing for Rainbows in the rain.   These fish are highly sought after by many fly fishermen due to the POWERFUL FIGHT they provide.... they wear me out, to be honest but once they are hooked, you gotta finish the fight...and rest afterwords... Ha.  Get out there and FLY FISH TENNESSEE!!!
