About Me

My photo
Fly Fish Tennessee - I am a (FIVE time) Fly Casting Champion and I've taught at THE UNIVERSITY OF TENNESSEE, Knoxville. I have fly fished all my life as fly fishing was the glue that bonded me with my dad, Dr. George Still. I made my first fly rod at age 12 and attended an advanced fly tying class with my dad at age 13. I have won a number of fishing contests while growing up. I simply want to provide the OPPORTUNITY for others to enjoy fly fishing by teaching students the sport. It is a terrific way to build lifelong relationships with multiple people. It is a sport that helps with the development of Patience, Kindness, and Gentleness and of course Self Control. I also like catching BIG FISH on BIG water!!! Call 865-696-9474 and tell me your background - I want to hear it.

FIGHT OF THE MONTH - JUNE 2017

FIGHT OF THE MONTH - JUNE 2017
20" Male Rainbow

This 20 Inch Male Rainbow Trout was in a shallow run but with a good amount of flow to keep him feeding.  I was surprised to have hooked him with the Bald Eagle flying around.... but BANG!!! fish on!  After many jumps and a 100 yard trip DOWNSTREAM... I was able to net this male beauty. Caught many on that special Father's Day 2017 outing on my homemade size 18 green midge.  GET OUT THERE AND FLY FISH TENNESSEE.

FIGHT OF THE MONTH - MAY 2017

FIGHT OF THE MONTH
This 20" Rainbow Trout could not pass up my own invention SIZE 18 bead head emerger on 5x tippet with a dead-float / indicator!!!  After catching a few "on top", the bite died down so I decided to go with one of my "lookalikes" just under the water.... BANG!!!  Keeping the rod at 11 O'clock and the line tight... the fish wore herself out in due time.   I love to FLY FISH TENNESSEE.   GET OUT THERE!!!

FIGHT OF THE MONTH - APRIL 2017

19" Rainbow Trout

This FIGHT OF THE MONTH for April 2017 took a homemade green nymph size #18 on 5x Tippet dropper - bottom fly.  Right where she was supposed to be... down deep.  When she hit, she came up to the top and ROLLED and I thought it was a carp.... After taking me downstream, I was able to net and release her in the calm water off to the side... I will be tying more of that pattern for sure as it worked all day long...   GET OUT THERE....

John Priano -- FORMER STUDENT -- FIRST FISH ON A FLY ROD

FIRST FLY ROD FISH
John Priano netted his first fish on a Pheasant Tail #16.  John made his presentation with a cast upstream and mended his line while watching his indicator.... bang... Fish On. After a good fight it was time to make the REEEAACH....and SMILES were all around.  Great Job John.  He went on that day to have a number of hook ups.   FLY FISH TENNESSEE

FIGHT OF THE MONTH - NOVEMBER 2016

Fly Fish Tennessee
23" Brown Trout
This 23" Brown Trout  - Fight of the Month - November 2016 - hit my Pheasant Tail dropper and went airborne a number of times!!  I could see she was a monster as she jumped about 5 times.  I believed she was 25" as she would hit the water like a sack of cement.  She went cross stream and down, of course, and the top fly got snagged on a rock as she was so far away I could not keep the line UP.  As I maneuvered toward her, the top fly became loose and we were off to the races, downstream... After a few quick pictures, a quick release for another catch sometime in the future.  What a fight!!!

FIGHT OF THE MONTH - OCTOBER 2016

Fly Fish Tennessee
21" Rainbow Trout
This 21" Rainbow Trout  - Fight of the Month for October - took me downstream where I was able to net her and release her quickly.  She was "right where she was supposed to be" in the deep current.  My trusty 4x tippet did the job holding on to her.  I would say she would tip the scales of + 3 lbs, easily.

FIGHT OF THE MONTH - SEPTEMBER 2016

Fly Fish Tennessee

This 21"4LB Female Rainbow Trout Fight of the Month - September - took a dry fly with 5x tippet on a Double Haul cast - downstream!!!  Upon the hookset, the fish danced on the top of the water and (you know) you have a big one when you see the tail splashing.... took off  passing me while headed upstream and I netted her about 30 Yards away fighting current to catch up!!!  WHAT A GREAT FIGHT.

RELEASED OF COURSE

Monday, September 12, 2016

FIGHT OF THE MONTH - AUGUST 2016

FIGHT OF THE MONTH
What a fight!!!  These fish hit your flies without warning since you are fishing DOWN DEEP.  It is hard to believe you can catch such big fish on small flies..... size 18.  This fish wore me out!!! After going downstream and into some smoother water, I was able to net this MONSTER.  I had to give my arm a rest after fighting this one....!!!

SIZE 18 - about the size of the DATE on a PENNY

19" Rainbow Trout

19" Rainbow Trout - 5x Tippet
SIZE 18  FLY  - not much bigger then the DATE on a PENNY

This 19" Rainbow Trout was "right where she was supposed to be" down deep in the fastest water in the stretch.  After taking my home-made size 18 fly, she jumped a number of times and took me WAY downstream to net her.   Fly Fish Tennessee

FIGHT OF THE MONTH - JULY 2016

21" Male Brown Trout
FIGHT OF THE MONTH - JULY 2016

This 21" Brown Trout hit my SIZE 18 midge.  Upon the hookup, I knew he was a big fish as he took off stripping my line UPSTREAM almost into my backing.  I kept him upstream from me by weaving back and forth and allowed me to use the current to get his head up, to net him.  Thanks to Derrick Douthat for the picture.

20" Female Rainbow Trout -- Fly Fish Tennessee

FLY FISH TENNESSEE
20" Rainbow Trout

This  20" Female Rainbow Trout was "right where she was supposed to be" -- down deep in the current... Hit my homemade size 18 Midge pattern.  WOW what a fight taking me way downstream to net her.  Once on the grass, she never moved... so tired.  Back into the water and after spending time with revival in the calm water... she was just fine.  Released of course.

20" Male Rainbow Trout - Fly Fish Tennessee

Fly Fish Tennessee
20" Rainbow Trout

This  20" Male Rainbow Trout  Hit my homemade fly pattern size 18 midge down deep... stripped off line into my backing and after a great fight taking me way down stream... quick pictures and released of course.

JOE FORE - FORMER STUDENT - STRIPER ON A FLY ROD

JOE FORE 25 LB STRIPER
Joe Fore  (former student) with his "Fight of the Month" was throwing a 9 wt Full Sinking Line off a boat, below a local dam.  He caught many that evening.  He rigged for them using a 9wt Fly Rod and the matching sinking line to get a fast falling presentation.  By stripping it back SLOWLY after letting it GO DEEP... the presentation was too much for this striper.  GREAT JOB JOE. You are now a Fly Fishing Master.

Monday, June 6, 2016

FORMER STUDENT -- Derrick Douthat - 20" BROWN TROUT

 Derrick Douthat  20" Brown Trout
FLY FISH TENNESSEE

This 20" Brown Trouwas no match for this (former student) Derrick Douthat.  The fish was feeding on small dry flies "on top".  Derrick choose the right fly to match the hatching flies, made the proper presentation by casting a little up stream... and when the fly floated over the fish... bang.  What a fight... Jumping and thrashing the water... Great Job Derrick.!!!!
