About Me

My Photo
Fly Fish Tennessee - I am a (FIVE time) Fly Casting Champion and I've taught at THE UNIVERSITY OF TENNESSEE, Knoxville. I have fly fished all my life as fly fishing was the glue that bonded me with my dad, Dr. George Still. I made my first fly rod at age 12 and attended an advanced fly tying class with my dad at age 13. I have won a number of fishing contests while growing up. I simply want to provide the OPPORTUNITY for others to enjoy fly fishing by teaching students the sport. It is a terrific way to build lifelong relationships with multiple people. It is a sport that helps with the development of Patience, Kindness, and Gentleness and of course Self Control. I also like catching BIG FISH on BIG water!!! Call 865-696-9474 and tell me your background - I want to hear it.

BIG CARP ON A FLY -- stripping a streamer

FLY FISH TENNESSEE
This 20" CARP took me by surprise but since I use 4x OR STRONGER tippet when I strip streamers... I was prepared.  Nothing easy about fighting a Carp... wears you out!!!!

FIGHT OF THE MONTH - SEPTEMBER 2015

FLY FISH TENNESSEE
SEPTEMBER -- FIGHT OF THE MONTH -- this 17.5 inch Brown Trout was all I could handle in the current. Fishing with my 5x Tippet off a dropper... size 18 midge.  Make sure you get down to the fish as she was "Right where she was supposed to be" in the deepest / fastest water.   After going DOWNSTREAM to net her in some calmer water... quick release.

FIGHT OF THE MONTH - AUGUST 2015

Fly Fish Tennessee
AUGUST -- FIGHT OF THE MONTH -- This 19 1/2 incher Rainbow Trout really surprised me because I thought he was much bigger the way she fought.  She was so thick and heavy, I thought she was 20+ inches.   After stipping off much line, she just would not stop fighting even up close.  I made a few misses with my net... until I GOT HER.   She was right were she was supposed to be!!!!

FIGHT OF THE MONTH - JULY 2015

Fly Fish Tennessee
JULY -- FIGHT OF THE MONTH - This 19 inch Rainbow Trout went nowhere upon hook set... just a few headshakes and then BLASTOFF... he took off upstream and then turned with a mad dash, downstream cross current!!!!  After going downstream to land him and a few quick pictures... he is released for another day.  What fun....

FIGHT OF THE MONTH -- JUNE 2015

Fly Fish Tennessee
JUNE - FIGHT OF THE MONTH --  This 17" Brown Trout pictured with the size 18 midge (on the cork handle) won the "FIGHT OF THE MONTH" for June.  He would not give up!!!  Jumping a number of times and stipping off line was just the beginning.  After going downstream to net this guy, a quick release,

Student Shares Success --- First time fly fishing

Email in --   Hey Drew, hope you're doing well. I am pretty pumped, made it up to the Hiwassee Saturday, flow was 1-0 generators so it was perfect for wadding. Tried my hand at a zebra midge with no luck, talked to another fly fisherman on his way out who told me he had just seen a May fly get devoured as soon as it hit the water. CLUE, I quickly tied on an Adams and made my way over to a nice run between the bank and a small island. First three cast I missed fish (you really have to be quick) on the fourth cast though I hooked up on a 10" rainbow. I believe that may be the most enjoyable fish I have ever landed, since it was my first fish ever on a dry fly I AM HOOKED!!! LOVE THIS SPORT!!! As the day went on I continued to catch fish on the Adams then switched to a black streamer with a little copper flash just for something different and caught one on the second cast. Wish I had pictures to share but I was by myself and haven't purchased a water-proof camera yet. I just wanted to share my experience with you, thought you would enjoy hearing one of your students was "productive on the stream". Thanks for all you taught us. I'll be in touch.

MARCH 2015 GRADUATES --

MARCH 2015 STUDENTS
What a FUN GROUP !!!  These students are ready to hit the stream with their Fly Rod in hand.  One of the best casting group I have had the pleasure to work with. These people came to learn the sport.  Thank you to my friends at 3 Rivers Angler Fly Shop for the tour and DVD night.
Back row Left to Right - Neil Burchfield, Jeremy Hobbs, Frank and Nikki Rozzell.
Center row - Angie and Steve Arnett, Chuck Bean.
Front Row - Michael Stafford, Dykie and Leslie Gentry.
Absent - Brian and Sam Bruce.

Chuck says   "This class takes a somewhat mystifying sport and breaks it down so that you have few questions and apprehensions... This is Simply an excellent class".

Brian says  " My son and I had recently started fly fishing and felt like we had learned a lot through youtube and discussions at fly shops locally. But we signed up for Drew’s class to make sure we covered everything. Boy, am I glad we did. Drew’s attention to the details of the sport were priceless. From his money saving tips, step-by-step description of gear, hands own casting instruction and informative (and humorous) fishing stories, this class was well worth the time and money. We now feel equipped and ready for the river. Most importantly, we are now fishing expecting to catch something during each outing. If you are interested in the sport, do yourself a favor and start with Drew’s class.

Nikki says  "Drew does a great job explaining the material...".

Frank says  "This class is great for any "level" of Fly Fisherman... takeaways for everyone".

Dykie says  "Your passion shines through and it is a pleasure to be in your class".

Mike says  "A very patient presentation to help anyone understand how to really get started.

Neil says  "This is a very informative class that has excellent hands-on instruction".

Steve says  "Don't go fly fishing without taking this class.  This class prepares you for what you will learn 'the hard way', on the river".

Angie says  "Thank you for a great class".
